OLED vs SED

Sony revived last year as their LCD sales becomes the top beating Sharp and Samsung (PS3 is not the reason~!). The Bravia brand is getting more and more acceptable and even in Japan, after Aquos, there is a Bravia phone.

With the departure of the chief designer of the 3 generations of PS, Ken Kutaragi, last month, Sony new directions of faster network and bigger screen are in driving position. Sony price is at peak recently, after their announcement of OLED. It’s because people anticipate a repeat of Bravia success. Here are some hard facts of OLED and its rival SED:

OLED (organic light-emitting diode):

- Sony
- 11in TV
- Release at the end of this year

SED (surface-conduction electron-emitter display):

-         Canon (canon to sell TV?!)
-         55in TV
-         Release at the end of this year

OLED:

-         Toshiba + Matsushita
-         21in TV
-         Release in 2009

With LCD price dropped 25 percent last year, 3mm OLED/SED is something going to dominate the market. SED is hard to fit in small devices while large OLED is very hard for mass production. Hmm… I think I would enjoy a cheap LCD right now~ :P Or I don’t mind my company “paste” the Sony OLED on my wall in office.

However, the first OLED would probably push Sony further from the peak in Q1 (remember the time~!).

BTW, iPhone probably will release in second week of June (I have read some talking about 11, 12, 14 and 26…) as time is approaching, I would like to see how much it would affect the other big guys.

Cheers,
Eric
