1996 - Waiting Chance
It was 1996, I left Wells Cathedral School and started my University life.
I can say, my University life is the golden time for my football.
From Wells, I got confidence, patience, skills and injuries. I am capable of playing with any people, read the game and understand their moves. I was not born as a good player, however, I tried my best every game. When I was young, I played till I got cramp every time, because I love football.
I then went to Imperial College. The first week was orientation week, I got to choose things that I like to do and societies that I like to join. Typically, I joined Chinese Society and drove by my enthusiasm, I joined Football Society. I knew before I went to Imperial that they played in Chelsea Practice pitch near Heathrow. I wanted to try the college team.
There I went, on a Wednesday. It was a day of football, well, after some tests and trials, dribbling and games, I was asked to go for 3rd team for another team trial on that Saturday. It took me 6 hours that day, since Heathrow was not close to our college at all. At night, I went to Chinese Society's welcome dinner, I told my seniors about the football I had that day. They all told me to join Chinese Society's Football team instead. It should be more fun, as they also have proper league and seems they are less time consuming...
On that Saturday, I went to play with Chinese in Hyde Park instead of College people in Heathrow. It was a pleasant morning, and many people were there. I saw the team captain, Ah Hung, and there was the star-like ex-captain Eric (another Eric). I was new in the team and the league was kicked start right on another week. I did not have a clue whether I would be played in the team or not, but I like the jokes and team spirit we had.
Finally, on the match day, I was asked to play as left back, with the Big Eric as sweeper. I learned a lot from him, like timing to attack and to defense. That helped me in playing in big field in an efficient way. I did score some goals, mainly from the corner kick of Eric. He was a good player and we were finally the first runner up of the tournament.
